I think that the typical first online experience was creating an email account whether it was AOL or Yahoo. I did have that experience, but I want to be different and speak about my first time getting in trouble on the internet with social media. The first social media I ever heard of was MySpace which was created in 2003, I was 10 years old. Luckily in my household there were no restricted websites on the computer because the whole family used it. At first I didn't feel the need to join this website but you know how the story goes once I saw that everyone else had one I immediately wanted one myself. One day when I was at a friends house she finally convinced me to make one and like most kids who goes against their parents wishes, I got caught. I was then grounded for 3 months or so, no internet and I wasn't allowed out with my friends. During the time I was grounded I started to hear stories in school of nasty rumors being spread over this site and I guess in the long run I was thankful for my parents just looking out for me. In case you were wondering in the long run I was finally able to create an account again with my parents approval, and it really wasn't all it was chopped up to be.
My opinions on the internet seem almost contradicting. I believe the internet is saving companies, lives, etc. all around the world while I also believe social media is destroying the world. Not only does that one sentence just sound contradicting, but I work for an online magazine running their social media including Twitter, Facebook, Pintrest, Google Plus, and Linked In all from a huge social media managing website called Hootsuite. So I do not want to complain about the internet because the internet will soon be what I make a living off of. But I do want to touch on a few things. Many people spend years studying in school for positions that will eventually land them in the social media but if you have been hiding behind social media in your personal life how are you going to be in a professional setting where you need to actually speak face-to-face. Luckily this hasn't affected me I fight for what I want, I wanted this position at the magazine so I went for it. People are losing face-to-face interaction, as my grandmother used to say "Back in my day we knocked on doors to speak to our friends." I wont say that I am "old fashioned" but I certainly agree with their methods. On the positive side the internet has done incredible things for us. Look at all the medical inventions that have been made that are saving lives! I don't look down on the internet I commend it for sure but I will continue to fear that face-to-face interaction will no longer exist on earth.
